Education and Career Guidance (ECG)
Education and Career Guidance (ECG)
At Hougang Secondary, our ECG programme supports students in developing a strong sense of purpose and direction, preparing them to be future-ready learners. Guided by the ECG Goals of discovering purpose, exploring opportunities, and staying relevant, students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning journey while developing self-awareness, resilience, adaptability, and a growth mindset.
Tiered ECG Support
Tier 1 Support
· Students engage in customised Student Development Experiences such as career talks, career fairs, and open house visits to post-secondary institutions. Through CCE lessons, students are taught to use the MySkillsFuture Student Portal ( https://go.gov.sg/MySFSec) to explore career options and plan their future.
Tier 2 and 3 Support
· Students participate in ECG workshops and talks led by our ECG Counsellor.
· Our ECG Counsellor also conducts parent engagement sessions and updates teachers on the latest ECG developments to ensure coordinated support for all students.

Student Initiated Learning (ECG)
To support students in developing clarity and direction in their learning
journey, the Student-Initiated Learning (SIL) programme is aligned with Education and Career Guidance (ECG) to
help them explore their passions and set meaningful goals.
Throughout their four years in Hougang Secondary School, students chart their growth through an individual e-portfolio, documenting key learning experiences and reflections that showcase their personal, academic, and career development.
The school’s SIL focus at each level is outlined below:
|
Sec |
Focus |
SIL Description |
|
1 |
Discovering purpose ‘Who am I?’ |
Students begin their self-discovery journey by identifying their interests, strengths, and values through the VIPS survey and other reflective activities. SIL serves as a platform for them to explore new hobbies, develop personal passions, and build self-awareness. |
|
2 |
Developing sense of purpose ‘What do I want to pursue’ |
Building on their experiences from Secondary 1, students consolidate what they have learnt through CCA, VIA, and ECG activities. They reflect on their interests and start setting goals that align with their emerging sense of purpose. |
|
3 |
Exploring Pathways and Opportunities ‘How do I get there?’ |
Students explore different education and career pathways related to their aspirations. Through research and experiential learning, they begin curating their e-portfolio to showcase learning evidence and achievements in areas of interest. |
|
4 |
Staying relevant ‘How far have I come?’ |
Students reflect on their growth and readiness for post-secondary education. They articulate their goals, document key learning experiences, and refine their e-portfolio to demonstrate how they have developed in knowledge, skills, and character. |
