HS Art Education
In HS, we aim to be an active platform for our students to experience, explore and enjoy Art. Students are encouraged to observe, record and make meaning of what they see, helping them recognise the relevance and value of art in their everyday lives.
Our Goals:
We strive to create an environment where students develop a critical eye for visual art and show ingenuity in their art-making processes.
We provide both in-school and out-of-school learning opportunities to inspire and cultivate art appreciation.
We encourage students to express and reflect on their thoughts through the making, discussion and critique of art.
We guide every student to recognise the value of art through its historical, cultural and contemporary contexts.
Our Platforms for Learning and Showcase
Art Learning Wall
The Art Learning Wall is a dedicated space in school that documents students’ creative processes, ideas and reflections. It allows students to see examples of art thinking, gather inspiration from peers and learn the value of process in art-making. The wall acts as a visual learning resource that supports observation, discussion and critique across all levels.
HS Art E_Gallery
The HS Art E-Gallery is our digital exhibition platform where students’ artworks are curated and displayed in a museum-like setting. It provides an authentic space for students to present their work, articulate their artistic intentions and experience what it means to be both artist and viewer. The E-Gallery also serves as a teaching and learning resource, allowing students to revisit artworks, study techniques and strengthen visual analysis skills.

Lower Secondary Art
Lower Secondary Art introduces students to a range of media and practices. Lessons encourage creative expression, experimentation and imaginative play, giving students the space to explore their own artistic ideas.
The programme builds on the core learning experiences of observing, exploring, creating and responding. Through hands-on activities, guided discussions and exposure to diverse artists and cultures, students develop visual awareness, interpretive skills and confidence in expressing their ideas.
These foundational experiences prepare students for deeper and more independent art learning in upper secondary.

Upper Secondary Art
Upper Secondary Art deepens students’ skills through a structured creative process involving research, idea development, composition and refinement. Students work with traditional and contemporary media such as batik, ceramics, digital art, painting, photography, printmaking and mixed media.
To broaden their perspectives, students participate in Learning Journeys to institutions such as the National Gallery Singapore, the Asian Civilisation Museum and major art exhibitions. These authentic experiences allow them to encounter artworks first-hand, understand how artists communicate meaning, and appreciate art across cultures and contexts. Through both studio practice and real-world exposure, students strengthen their visual analysis, interpretation and critical thinking skills. By the end of the programme, they are able to produce resolved artworks that demonstrate creativity, technical competence and a clear personal voice.
Art Competitions & Student Achievements
Our students are given opportunities to participate in a wide range of art competitions and national platforms. Over the years, they have received accolades in major events such as the Singapore Youth Festival Art Exhibition, IgnITE Skills Challenge, National Organ Transplant Unit Live On Festival Design Competition, ViART Awards, SLS Avatar Design Competition, Comic Strip Competitions, and more.
We are proud to celebrate their achievements and the creativity, effort, and dedication they demonstrate through the Visual Arts.
Below are the achievements from recent years:
2025
• Live On Festival (LOF) Design Competition - Certificate of Merit: Alden Ang (4S); featured in the official LOF video during the awards ceremony. Artworks were showcased at public roaming exhibitions.
• ViART Awards - 3rd Place (Most Creative Award): Kwok Jia Ying (2A); artwork displayed at the Sustainable Singapore Gallery.
2024
• Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Art Exhibition - Certificates of Recognition: Paraan Mari Angela Generao (4U); Tay Zhi Xin, Chloe Tan, Yu Tong and Bok Cheng Jun (Sec 1); Tricia Lim, Chan Yu Han, Leong Gia Swen and Gladys Wong (Sec 2).
The artwork by Tricia Lim, Chan Yu Han, Leong Gia Swen and Gladys Wong was also displayed at the Ministry of Education Headquarters (Buona Vista) from 2024–2025.
All three artworks were exhibited at the National Gallery Singapore.
• Live On Festival (LOF) Design Competition - Certificate of Distinction: Charlotte Koh (4R7); Certificate of Merit: Jonas Chua (4R7). Artworks were showcased at public roaming exhibitions.
• IgnITE Skills Challenge - Finalist (3NA) and Certificate of Participation (3NT).
• ViART Awards - 2nd Place (Most Creative Award): Teo Shin Hwee Grace (4G); 3rd Place (Most Artistic Award): Lewis Teo Jun Heng (1U); artworks displayed at the Sustainable Singapore Gallery.
2023
● Live On Festival (LOF) Design Competition - 4th Place: Sakinah Binte Jefri (4N); Certificate of Merit: Djanaguiraman Harisha (2N). Artworks were showcased at public roaming exhibitions.
● ViART Art Award - 3rd Place (Most Artistic Award): Kang Chei Min and Sakinah Bte Jefri (4N); 3rd Place (You Make a Difference Award): Joshua Wong and Chen Song Ze (4S). Artworks were displayed at the Sustainable Singapore Gallery and auctioned for a good cause, with proceeds donated to charity.
2022
● Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Art Exhibition - Certificate of Distinction: Chloe Soh (4E4).
● SG Clean Comic Strip Competition - Shortlisted and featured in the SG Clean Comic Book: Sakinah Bte Jefri (4N).
● Live On Festival (LOF) Design Competition - Certificate of Distinction: Tricia Wu En Ting (4A1).
2021
● Live On Festival (LOF) Design Competition - Certificate of Distinction: Ho Jun Wei (4E3). Artworks were showcased at public roaming exhibitions. ● Student Learning Space (SLS) Avatar Competition - Artwork selected and featured in SLS Avatar: Holmberg Eunice (3E3). ● Ministry of Education Corporate Gifts Repository - Artwork by Sheraz Lim (4E4) selected for the Ministry’s repository of corporate gifts, presented by MOE political leaders and senior management to their foreign counterparts.
Art Community Engagement
At HS, art extends beyond the classroom. Through public events, collaborative projects and authentic platforms, our students use art to communicate ideas, engage with the community and contribute meaningfully to shared causes.
Youth Festival 2025
Students engaged the community through eco-friendly tote bag designs. Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong visited the booth, interacted with our students and received a personalised tote bag designed by one of them. The experience provided students with an authentic platform to share their artistic intentions, build confidence and connect with members of the public.
25th Anniversary Collaborative Batik Artwork (2025)
To commemorate the school’s 25th Anniversary, students, staff and members of the HS community came together to create a large-scale collaborative batik artwork. Participants explored batik techniques and contributed motifs that symbolise unity, gratitude and the Hougean spirit. The completed artwork stands as a visual celebration of our identity, creativity and collective journey as a school.
AMK-Hougang Eco-Passion Art Festival 2024
As part of this community event, students showcased upcycled artworks that promoted environmental awareness and sustainable practices. This collaborative effort between the Art and Green Committees encouraged students to rethink waste, practise creative reuse and engage the public in conversations about environmental responsibility through art.
Sino-SIN Exchange Programme:
HS hosted a three-day school visit with Haikou No 1. Middle school and our Art Unit was delighted to share a hands-on Art lesson with them. Students recreated the beautiful plants found at our Singapore Botanical Gardens on ceramic tiles.

Inter-disciplinary Museum-based learning
Students were introduced to artworks by local and international artists, offering them the chance to appreciate and craft literary responses through poem-writing. The lesson was led by the Art and English Literature Unit.
